Passionate about music? I am certain you will love this article!
www.last.fm is a website which collects stats of music you listen to a provides you with a lot of features which you just might find very promising. All you need to do is register with last.fm – membership is free although there is a subscription option which provides additional features. Once registered you need to download the last.fm software from:

http://www.last.fm/tools/downloads/

Once downloaded just follow onscreen instructions to install the software and then all you need is an internet connection!

There are plugins you might need to download depending on the music player you use to listen to your music – the last.fm software will automatically notify you about this.

Once up and running last.fm tracks all the music you listen to song by song and uses a function they uniquely call “scrobbling” which sends song information to the last.fm website. Once you are a regular user you get the following advantages:

1) Last.fm provides fora / discussion boards that are music related. These play a very important part if you are a music enthusiast because discussion boards generally mean answered questions

2) It provides you with a journal function – got a new album by your favourite artist? Wanna write a review about it? Journal it up baby!
3) You can add other members as friends, or invite your very own friends to join last.fm and the software allows you to recommend them music!
4) Whilst collecting music you can tag it – this means providing a genre classification to the song you are listening to – which helps other last.fm users to recognise what sort of music they wanna listen to depending on this classification. For example – if you tag incubus (my favourite band )
as an ‘alternative rock’ band enough times other people will see this tag when they are listening to incubus and runing the last.fm software!
5) Last.fm tracks the genre of music you listen to and provides you song recommendations you might like! How awesome is that?
6) When you listen to a certain artist, last.fm provides you information regarding the artist / band which of course is member edited. So if you have a low profile band which you really like you can probably edit their wiki information on last.fm so other like minded people can listen to them!
7) Last.fm calculates neighbours for you – people who listen to music similar to you!

There are various other features which of course you will only know when you use last.fm. I am currently a newbie (only registered this month) but I am still learning so if you have any questions that need to be answered please leave a comment and I will try and help ya out. I am putting up a few print screens for the reader to get a ‘feel’ of last.fm too!
