Tweaking Windows startup

October 26th 2006 02:15
Do you have a lot of stuff loading when windows starts up? Does it make the startup really slow? Here’s a way you can fix this!

Go to the start menu > run > Type “msconfig”.

This will bring up another window. In this window click the rightmost tab. Its called “Startup”.

Uncheck boxes next to applications which you don’t want starting up when windows starts up.

It will then ask you to re-start your computer. You can either restart it at this stage or exit without restart. If you choose exit without restart the changes will take place the next time you restart your computer.

****Please note that there are inherent risks whilst dealing with the startup menu and hence please carefully make sure that the application isn’t an internal windows application.

In a nutshell

October 20th 2006 03:38

Yes, this is a blog. Whilst there is a sea of millions, or possibly – billions of blogs on the internet this is not meant to quite fit that category. The topic at hand is technical / PC related support and trouble shooting of problems that any reader may have.

Whilst I will endeavour to always provide the most accurate information and assistance, the reader should note that they follow the solutions I provide on their own risk. If you do not agree to this please do NOT follow whatever solutions I provide.
This, obviously does not mean that I don’t know what I am talking about. The problems / solutions I post here are of course, mostly, methodologies that have been tried and tested by me personally.

There is also another point I wish to make here. Any posts which are not related to the topic at hand (which so happens to be PC related technical support), will be deleted. Obviously, posts which are not relevant but have some form of relation will be kept – within reason. This reason shall be decided by me.

Furthermore, if any reader wishes to share information regarding solutions they came up with that more efficient than solutions I provide, I would like to hear from them. This blog is meant to provide a platform of assistance to the reader – and I very much stand by this.

Happy posting!
~Harsh

Recently, I’ve come across a lot of computers running a Windows NT based OS being affected by browser hijacking problems. The main symptom of this problem is when the browser’s home page gets redirected to some other page – normally one related to the spyware causing the browser hijacking problem in the first place. There are a variety of applications which can fix spyware problems such as adaware and spybot – S and D that are quite easy to use, yet in most cases have not been effective to remove browser hijacking problems. After doing a bit of research on the internet, I came across a popular freeware spyware removal application called Hijackthis (author Merijn Bellekom). To remove browser hijacking problems using Hijackthis, one may follow these few simple steps:

1) Double click hijackthis and press “Do a system scan and save a log file”

This will come up with a varible of check boxes / entries. Browse through these entries to find a BHO which might use phrases related to website which the browser gets redirected to.

2) Click the check box next to the entry once it is found (at this stage close all open browser windows)

3) Click fix checked. This should fix the problem!

Hijackthis is freeware which means it does not cost to download / use it. Download locations can be found by doing a simple search on a popular search engine such as www.Google.com

One must note that there are a lot of settings that come up as check box entries on Hijackthis and one must take extreme caution whilst fixing such entries – careful reading will reveal if the application / service is part of the system settings or just plain spware. Users should note that any problems using hijackthis may cause is their own responsibility.
